Sons help with dad’s campaign
By ANDREW BRANCA Daily Light staff writer
Published: Tuesday, September 16, 2008 2:42 PM CDT Ludwig Otto’s quest to unseat U.S. Congressman Joe Barton (R-Ennis) and take the Sixth District position has become a family affair. Working behind the scenes of his campaign are his two sons, Ryan and Matthew.
“One of the main things that we have helped him with is that he is always bouncing ideas off of us,” Ryan said. “He’s always talking to us about different issues that are important to him and to the people he has met.
“With all of the things that Dad has done in his life, it has made him a well-rounded person,” he said. “He is a good listener, kind and compassionate.”
Ryan teaches composition and writing part-time at a private college in Tennessee. With his academic background, Ryan helps out with the editing of different campaign materials.
Although he lives out of state, he’s able to look over documents that are sent to him via e-mail.
“I have a background in English and one of the main things you have to do, as a composition instructor, is that you have to look at people’s arguments and ideas. Then you have to put them in some type of logical format and respond to them,” Ryan said. “I think that is a big part of being in office and what Dad will be charged to do as a congressman is to hear what people have to say – and then being able to apply that … to create the change that is needed. That type of analytical skill is important.”
Otto’s other son, Matthew, also works on the campaign, using his skills as a photographer and Web designer. Matthew works to provide the best impression possible of what his father will do if elected by the voters. Matthew also acts as a sounding board for his father’s ideas.
“On a daily basis, I check his Web site to keep it updated and to proof it. It’s just that it is a great platform to reach people,” Matthew said. “If you get that part of it wrong, you could send the wrong message. It’s a first impression to people.”
Working on the campaign with their father has shown the two brothers that a group of determined people can promote change for their community.
“I think this has shown me that there are more things that you can do at a more localized level that can be very effective,” Ryan said. “Being with Dad and meeting with different groups, I see people can create change by banding together.
“I’m thinking about this group that we met in Waxahachie the other day and it was a couple of farmers talking about soil and irrigation,” he said. “A community of concerned farmers could really make a difference.”
Matthew said his father has a genuine concern for the issues that affect people directly.
“It is very easy to become pessimistic about it (politics) and I think for a while I had that view,” Matthew said. “Like Ryan said, going to these meetings and seeing people of all walks of life and ages, we’re seeing people who are concerned and trying to do something about it. Those are the people who are going to make change happen.”
