Old Folks are the Future started about 25 years on a luxury cruise out of Barcelona, Spain. Those were the days when American Airlines was still paying great commissions and we had won free tickets for both the cruise and airfare. We were leaving the French Riviera and heading to Monaco when romantic Maxine wanted to know why I kept singing “We Real Cool” and I told her about Poet Laureate Gwendolyn Brooks, who was from the Southside of Chicago .
“Well, if she can send poor students to Europe when they graduate from High School, then why can’t the church provide housing for old folks.”Her logic is beyond dispute!
So, when we got to Rome, we asked some of the Catholic hierarchy about homes for old folks and they said they had been helping old folks for hundreds of years. We’re Baptist and we never heard of a Baptist home for old folks, so we decided that all churches should start homes for old folks and we would start with Texas Baptist churches.
There are lots of old folks in Texas and some of them really need help, and that’s how Old Folks are the Futuregot started.Ludwig knows from personal experience the desperate needs of some old folks. He was the senior pastor of a church in Euless, Texas that had a bus that brought nursing home residents to church on Wednesday night and Sunday morning. An 80 year old woman made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and he was privileged to baptize her.80 years old and she is going to heaven and not hell! There are many things that old folks need and salvation is the most important.
Ludwig’s a retired Southern Baptist preacher who graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and served as Senior Pastor of 5 SBC churches in Texas (Fort Worth, Joshua, Euless, Bedford, and Amarillo) and has taught at 11 colleges and universities in Texas. So we think we know enough folks to get this idea moving. He also ran for US Congress in 2008!
We’ll come to your church “free of charge” and pay our own travel expenses.Old Folks are the Future and we would like to tell you why they are both the present and the future.
The 80year old Anna meeting the infant Jesus in the temple and being led by the Holy Spirit to recognize Him as the promised Savior is an image of old age performing a task assigned by God. Old age carries with it a challenge. Living as an old person means continued spiritual effort. The struggle for the Kingdom of God does not stop when you retire. An old person's infirmities force one to be more humble and effective in the work of the Lord Jesus Christ.
